Village Golubinci - Ethnic-Eco museum

Jovanka Secanski

Objective of the project:
The objective is to develop weekend - tourism based on the village tradition and beauty found in simplicity. Golubinci is situated at the crossroad, between Belgrade (39 km away) and Novi Sad (45 km away) which gives it the ideal position for daily and weekend tourism.
It is our wish to develop tradition of the weekend tourism for families from cities so that they spend their weekends together, meet and communicate, these things being a prerequisite for a healthy and content family.

The concept of this project is not a typical approach to museology, the Schlos Catsle as the symbol of the village in 1767. resembling Europe of that time. The Castle once again is to be the symbol of new hopes and entry in new Europe. In applied art of a new, creative and energetic spirit, it should be a challenge to the young to be able to realize their life and dreams in the village.

A village should not imitate urban culture, it has its own atmosphere and identity and thus, it has a great importance for a healthy economy. It has to make an effort and get serious support for its new way and life in 21 century. The economic and cultural transformation of new tradition of the life in a village has to be created if we want to have life in villages in Voivodina..
Development of tourism in Golubinci represents sustainable development. In the beginning, it would be additional income to the households, later, various family businesses would develop. The consciousness about the importance of cultural monuments, and there are many here, would develop. Two of the monuments have exquisite importance, nine are very important, and together with the whole ambience of the centre of the village, they are national categories. But, neither the villagers nor the local authorities experience them as a part of the local identity, this is why they are left on their own in the time. Development of tourism would give them a new function and a new importance, ant that would contribute to their better maintenance, like in Europe.

With this project, the ideal of countryside life could be achieved, and this means:

  • Clean, safe environment
  • Sustainable eco-system
  • Promotion and respect of historical and cultural inheritance
  • Community life based on mutual support
  • High degree of public participation in local and regional government
  • Development of various and innovative family business which provides full employment

Why do I connect revitalization village Golubinci to culture?

In every nation, either local or wider, culture is a way and method of forming the existence of one community. Culture, like life, is not static, it offers us different methods of handing down and renovating both spiritual and non spiritual inheritance.
Culture knows how to keep and respect tradition. In the mean time it offers possibilities, opens new roads of its further superstructure, and development of nations and their forming in time and space.
Development of market economy has a great influence on development of modern society and people, and this is why cultural creative work has a character of merchandise and brings to each its creator a merited profit. Because of this, this project sees both material and non material culture of the village as resource to be put on the market for tourism, and thus preserve cultural inheritance which will bring profit as well.
Traditional village culture usually brings to one`s mind a picture of the Serbian village of 19. century, but today the village is something else. Such image of the village culture and life is not sustainable in 21. century. The village today needs new chances and possibilities for its further development, so that life in it reflects the present, in both economic and cultural aspect.
The traditional farming culture of the village of Vojvodina is the past, and the new has not found its way to the new quality of life yet. Many elements from the village life have been changed because tilling of land, which influences the formation of the specific village culture, has also changed.
The culture of dwelling and the way of communication has changed, as well as the way of thinking. The village today is market oriented - all this is in accordance with the present time and the transition, through which the village has passed, unnoticed. It adopts the market oriented way of thinking quicker because it is the owner of its goods and work. Therefore, it demands the right to evaluation and profit.

Unfortunately, almost nobody is taking care of the village and its culture of living and economy, it survives rather elementally. Big investments are usually directed to industries as if the fertile soil of Vojvodina were not a great capital, which is dead today. If that capital were modernized, the quality of life in the village would be advanced. This would be the reason for life in villages in Vojvodina to become reputable again. It is a great task set in front of the State.
This project respects the present and past situation of the village as well as the recommendations of the UNESCO for sustainable development. This is not a big investment project, but it is a project of great possibilities for development of family business.

Golubinci possesses rich cultural monuments which had been planned and built during the period of Maria Theresa. The symbol and the identity of its development is the Schlos Castle built in 1767, in which Karadjordje had stayed in 1813. In the centre of the village there are also buildings which belong to the same period of the Vojna Krajina culture, as well as beautiful sacral buildings
Multiethnic structure of the inhabitants makes it even more attractive and culturally richer. Many elements from old, “plowman`s” culture have entered applied arts, and have been cherished by many sympathizers.
Golubinci is situated at the crossroad, 39 km away from Belgrade, and 45 from Novi Sad. It is not a suburb. It has all the charm of once successful farming village, and all the necessary potential for development of tourism which would represent additional income to a family budget and also enrich cultural life here.
The structure of the inhabitants is also interesting: 30.6% - high school, college - 3.4%, university - 2.7%, refugees - 32.5%, unemployed - 15.6%. a poll was held to investigate how many of the inhabitants would get engaged with tourism - 60.6% answered with “yes”, whereas 71.3% believes that tourism would be a possibility to develop the village and life of the young.
The tendency of withering away of the village can be stopped, but only if new chances for its revitalization are offered. The revitalization is possible here because the village has kept the traditional logic in thinking - without work, there is no bread or life. Work and order are still on the pedestal of the system of values. Therefore, if given new possibilities, it would readily make an effort.
Because of this, individual initiatives of the villagers are relevant and have to be supported and encouraged, they can be realized in a good partnership with many institutions, which represents a modern process of the new development and it enriches the villagers with new skills and knowledge.
State economy has become history as well as the past system. This is why this project is interesting; cooperation and teamwork are necessary to fulfill the objectives beneficial for the community.

Partnership

It is a way of connecting with relevant institutions and individuals involved with the development of the community.
This is a modern way of functioning of the democratic society in order to offer equal opportunities and rights to everybody, so that they can equally participate in the development of the community. Thus, political party domination, typical for autocratic systems, would be reduced.
In addition, this kind of cooperation brings education to both villagers and government in order to establish functioning of democracy.
This is why the association “Schlos” in Golubinci respects and evaluates partnership with the Municipality of Stara Pazova, with the state institutions (for instance, with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, The Secretariat of Culture and Education of Vojvodina, The Bureau For Protection of Cultural Monuments, with the inhabitants of Golubinci, as well as with the associations such as Cultural Society “Golubinci”, Cultural Society “Tomislav”, which are looking after the non-material ethnic culture of the village.
We all participate together in the process of the village revitalization, with the stress on the preservation of the cultural heritage, which represents a new, significant resource for the village Golubinci in its new function of the sustainable development.
The objective of the project “Village Golubinci - Ethnic-Eco Museum” is the revitalization of the village through the inherited wealth of the cultural monuments in this Pannonian pearl of the rural village architecture. This dead capital which is waiting to be restored and to get beauty and its old splendour in a new function in the development of cultural and agricultural tourism, as it has been envisaged by the project of Mrs. Jovanka Secanski.
The development of human communities cannot be realized without the respect for the significance of the ecological balance which has been severely endangered by the man and the modern civilization. Therefore, every country is obliged to make an effort to plant trees and clean water and land from pollution. Our Vojvodina is one of the barest areas on the European continent, and because of that, The Secretariat For Agriculture and Waterpower of Vojvodina has taken measures to protect the environment. with the project ”For greener, cleaner Vojvodina”.
The association “Schlos” has joined the action of the Municipality within the frame of the project mentioned above (”For greener, cleaner Vojvodina”) in order to participate in afforesting of the village Golubinci. We needed help from experts for the implementation of this action. The result was partnership of the association “Schlos” with the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade, which has offered practical help to the inhabitants of Golubinci in planting of 800 melliferous seedlings .These seedlings will protect the village from winds, influence the improvement of the climate, contribute to the ecological balance and provide pasture for beekeepers.
All our effort would not have any sense if in this process of the revitalization were not engaged young people. This is why our cooperation with the local school and its teachers and pupils is worth mentioning and attention. Working with the young, we hand down knowledge, love, and the importance of taking care of the cultural heritage. The importance of culture in our lives depends on how much we know and apply it. It is a complex and powerful mean in the hands of the people who understand and know how to use and apply it in order to improve the quality of life.
Therefore, partnership is our cultural key which helps us to open the door for cooperation for the success of the project “Village Golubinci - Ethnic - Eco Museum”.
